Joseph A. Garcia-Prats
Joseph A. Garcia-Prats, M.D. is a Professor and practicing neonatologist at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and holds joint appointments in the Department of Pediatrics and Center for Ethics, Medicine and Public Issues. He is originally from El Paso, Texas where he went to Jesuit High School after which he obtained his undergraduate degree at Loyola University New Orleans. He received his medical degree at Tulane Medical School and did his pediatric training and fellowship in neonatology at Baylor College of Medicine. He is the Medical Director of the Arnold J. Rudolph Memorial Newborn ICU, Ben Taub General Hospital and the Deputy Medical Director of Nurseries, Ben Taub General Hospital. Joseph was the 2007 recipient of the Arnold J. Rudolph Lifetime Teaching Award at Baylor College of Medicine. Joseph and his wife, Cathy, have been married 50 years and are the proud parents of ten sons ranging in age from 47 to 29.
Joseph co-authored with Cathy the bestseller Good Families Don’t Just Happen and Good Marriages Don’t Just Happen. Joseph also co-authored with Sharon Simmons Hornfischer, R.N., B.S.N., What to do When Your Baby is Premature. Joseph and Cathy lecture nationally and internationally, individually and as a couple, on parenting, family, marriage, and relationships. The Garcia-Prats family has appeared on many television programs including The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Gayle King Show, American Journal and Primer Impacto. They also have been featured in many major newspapers and magazines throughout the United States. In 1998, Family Services of Greater Houston honored the Garcia-Prats family as “Houston Family of the Year.” Cathy and Joseph are the 2009 recipients of the “Standard of Christ Award” presented by the Jesuit Volunteer Corps South.
Joseph volunteers with his church, his sons’ school and sports activities as well as the community. Joseph and Cathy have been sponsor couples for their parish marriage preparation ministry for 27 years.
